"Oh, that can't be true," Cameron says, expression turning immediately, if briefly, apologetic. She would know better than him, after all, whether or not it is, but it seems to him as if it must be an exaggeration. His life was messy when he arrived here, too, but that doesn't have to be the whole story. She has a future back in her world, a family, a home; it can't be so hopeless, this mess, that it would make her want to give all that up. Things are problematic at home and he knows he's looking forward to years of painful litigation upon his return, but at least back there, he'd be able to do something to fix the tangle he's made of things. It's his responsibility to see to it that things progress as they should. Maybe it won't work out like they want, but at least he'd know he made the effort. "I'm sure whatever it was, when you get home, you'll put it right. It'll be good just to be home."
